Gus and Aspen grazing in a Cariboo pasture under a big sky
Our Horses

The residents, the alumni, the ones still waiting.

Who we take in

Slaughter-bound. Neglected. Abandoned.

We take horses most rescues can't โ€” kill-pen pulls, surrender cases, neglect situations, and the occasional auction buy-back. Every horse gets a full vet workup, farrier, dentals, nutrition plan, and however much time they need to decompress. Only once they're healthy, sound, and honestly assessed do we start looking for a match.

Our residents

These two came in as rescues and never left. They're permanent members of the Second Step family.

Gus, a chestnut Belgian draft horse with a flaxen mane, standing in birch trees

Gus

Gus was our first and only sight-unseen auction purchase โ€” a gut feeling, a last-second bid, and some last-minute logistics. He arrived very underweight, shut down, and sad. Said to have been previously trained to drive, we don't actually know what Gus' history has held. He's a little shy softy in a dinosaur's body, but something about his good looks and charm meant he was here to stay. He now stands guard as head of the Cariboo herd โ€” and everyone's favourite blondie.

Aspen, a young chestnut Quarter Horse cross in a green pasture

Aspen

Aspen came to us the same year as Gus and honestly, could have been his daughter. Her confidence and curiosity stood out right away โ€” while she was still feral, she watched everything as if she was just waiting for her time to shine. She quickly won us over with her fancy feet and red-headed sass. When it came time to find her a home, Madi's mom decided to adopt her (aka Stinky Twinkie) as the first permanent resident on the new Cawston farm. Stay tuned โ€” this one has a competitive heart and a bright future.
